Whether you’re using it for business or personal needs, a trailer can be a fantastic investment. However, it’s also one that can be quite difficult to decide on, with the abundance of different trailer types, varieties, and quality levels giving you a lot to consider before you settle on a final purchase. After all, trailers aren’t all made for the same purposes, and to ensure that you’re getting the most out of your trailer purchase, you need to first ensure that your choice lines up with your needs.
At Big Man Trailer Co, we are a passionate manufacturer and distributor of high-quality galvanised trailers in an array of different designs and styles. So, when we’re working with a potential buyer, we do everything we can to understand their needs and get them the trailer that is best suited to the job. So, without further adieu, let’s take a look at some tips for choosing the right trailer.
Things to Consider Before Buying a Trailer
Before you head out and start looking at trailers for sale, you must first consider whether you’re set up for a trailer. Trailers are quite large, and even with a premium-grade galvanised coating, you’ll want to make sure that you have a place to store them and keep them from being too exposed to the elements. Additionally, not every car is going to be capable of safely towing every trailer. So, naturally, you’ll need to find out your vehicle’s towing capacity before you start purchasing the biggest, heaviest thing you can find.
For those who are trying to find out their vehicle’s maximum towing capacity, you’re in luck. Your vehicle’s manual will have extensive information on the capacity of your vehicle, though keep in mind that the closer you get to that maximum towing limit, the more difficult your trailer may be to navigate. In other words, if you have a smaller vehicle, you may want to go with a smaller single-axle variety over one of its larger counterparts.
Once you’ve got all the information, you can start thinking about what you’ll be using your trailer for.
Purpose of the Trailer
Each trailer is going to bring something a little different to the table, and whilst they all serve the same basic role of assisting in transport, the specifics can be a little more nuanced. In part, assuming that maximum towable load isn’t an issue, there will be a tradeoff between capacity and maneuverability. A heavier-duty trailer, for example, will be able to carry more weight safely but won’t be as easy to move with as other varieties. If you’re someone whose job requires the moving of large objects or pieces of equipment, this is going to be the best option for you. That said, if you’re going to be using the trailer for recreational or personal purposes, the lighter-weight option is going to provide the best experience overall.
To Cage or Not to Cage
Another factor to consider is whether you’ll need a trailer cage. As the name suggests, a trailer cage is essentially a container that can be attached to your trailer for additional protection. This acts as a bit of a trade-off, with your trailer providing more security to the items within whilst also creating additional size limitations that wouldn’t otherwise be there with a traditional trailer. For those carrying a large number of smaller items, a trailer cage is perfect, but if you’re only planning on carrying larger or longer/taller items, the cage may interfere with that.
Choosing Your Trailer Size
We discussed this a little earlier in the piece, but you shouldn’t always be going for the biggest trailer possible, despite it initially seeming like the most practical choice. While space in a trailer is certainly good, the overall usability of the trailer will be hindered if you get a size that is too big or too small for your needs. So, consider making a list of what you’re likely to use your trailer for and find options that are going to provide the optimal experience for those items. There may be times in which a larger trailer is needed, but going for a trailer more suited to your average needs will save you a lot of pain in the long run.
